Abraham Ortelius was a Flemish cartographer whose Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, published in Antwerp in 1570, is considered the first modern atlas. He drew on the best sources he could find from across Europe and credited every map's author, creating a model that the great atlas-makers of the next century followed.
