Maps & Celestial Charts

Maps and Celestial Charts is a tradition of cartographic art spanning the fifteenth to nineteenth centuries, with its golden age in the Dutch, Flemish, and French publishing houses of the Renaissance and Enlightenment and a strong later presence in British cartography. Defined by their combination of geographical precision and decorative artistry, these works serve simultaneously as scientific documents and visual showpieces. Key practitioners include Abraham Ortelius, the Flemish mapmaker whose Theatrum Orbis Terrarum (1570) is widely regarded as the first modern atlas, and the Turgot plan of Paris (1739), commissioned by Michel-Étienne Turgot and drawn by Louis Bretez, one of the most celebrated achievements of urban cartography in Europe.
