Claude Monet was a French painter and one of the founders of Impressionism, the movement that took its name from his 1872 painting Impression, Sunrise. He spent the last thirty years of his life at Giverny, painting the pond, willows and water lilies of his own garden in series after series that captured the changing light of a single place.

Best known for: Water Lilies, Impression Sunrise, Haystacks, Rouen Cathedral
