Dante Gabriel Rossetti was a British painter, poet and a founder of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. His richly coloured, symbol-laden portraits of women, often his wife Elizabeth Siddal or Jane Morris, helped to define the medievalising aesthetic of nineteenth-century British art.
