Edgar Degas

1834–1917 · French · Impressionism

Edgar Degas was a French Impressionist best known for his unfinished-looking ballet rehearsals, racetrack scenes and pastel studies of women at their toilette. He preferred the word Realist to Impressionist, working from the modern subject matter of the Paris of his time with an almost photographic sense of cropping.

Best known for: Ballet dancers, racehorses, women bathing, pastels
