Édouard Manet was a French painter who stood at the threshold between Realism and Impressionism. His provocative Olympia and Le Déjeuner sur l'herbe scandalised the Salon and changed the trajectory of European art, opening the way for the younger Impressionists who took him as their reluctant figurehead.
