Fan Kuan was a Northern Song dynasty painter whose monumental ink-on-silk landscape Travelers Among Mountains and Streams is considered one of the greatest paintings in Chinese art. Working from direct observation of the Shaanxi mountains, he established the model of the towering monumental landscape that defined the early Song style.
