Frans Hals was a Dutch Golden Age portraitist whose loose, almost Impressionist brushwork captured a sense of movement and presence rarely seen in seventeenth-century painting. His militia portraits and the famous Laughing Cavalier brought a new immediacy to formal portrait painting.
