Guo Xi was a Northern Song court painter and theorist whose Early Spring is one of the supreme achievements of Chinese landscape painting. His treatise The Lofty Message of Forests and Streams, set down by his son, codified the seasonal moods and shifting viewpoints of the monumental landscape tradition.
