Ivan Aivazovsky was a Russian-Armenian Romantic painter who produced more than six thousand paintings, almost all of them of the sea. His ability to render light through water, storm-driven waves and the slow drama of the open ocean made him the most celebrated marine painter of the nineteenth century.
