Jean-François Millet

Jean-François Millet was a French Realist and a founder of the Barbizon School. His grave, dignified paintings of peasant life, including The Gleaners and The Angelus, brought rural labour to the centre of nineteenth-century art and made him a touchstone for Van Gogh and the social realists who followed.
