John Atkinson Grimshaw was a British Aesthetic Movement painter known for his haunting moonlit and gaslit scenes of Victorian cities, docks and country lanes. His meticulous nocturnes made him a favourite of the merchants of Leeds and Liverpool and a continuing influence on filmmakers and photographers.
