John Constable

1776–1837 · British · British Romanticism

John Constable was a British landscape painter who devoted himself to the countryside of his native Suffolk. His detailed cloud studies and his great six-foot canvases of working farmland, including The Hay Wain, were quietly revolutionary in their commitment to ordinary English landscape as a serious subject.
