John Gould was a British ornithologist who, with his wife Elizabeth and a team of artists, produced a series of monumental illustrated bird books. His Monograph of the Trochilidae, the hummingbirds, ran to 360 hand-coloured plates and remains one of the most ambitious works of natural-history publishing.
