Joseph Wright of Derby was a British painter who put the Enlightenment on canvas. His candle-lit interiors of scientific demonstrations, including An Experiment on a Bird in the Air Pump, gave new dignity to the world of natural philosophy and the industrial revolution unfolding around him.
