Kitagawa Utamaro was a Japanese ukiyo-e printmaker celebrated above all for his bijin-ga, portraits of beautiful women. His close-cropped, half-length compositions on patterned mica backgrounds set the template for the genre and rank among the most refined prints of the Edo period.
