Maria Sibylla Merian

Maria Sibylla Merian was a German-born naturalist and illustrator who in 1699 sailed at fifty-two to the Dutch colony of Surinam to study its insects and plants. The book that followed, with its life cycles of butterflies and moths shown on their host plants, was a foundational work for both entomology and scientific illustration.
