Mary Cassatt

1844–1926 · American · Impressionism

Mary Cassatt was an American painter and printmaker who spent most of her career in France, becoming the only American formally invited to exhibit with the Impressionists. Her tender, unsentimental studies of mothers and children, and her flat decorative prints made under the influence of Japanese ukiyo-e, place her at the centre of late nineteenth-century European art.

Best known for: Mother and child scenes, The Boating Party, drypoint prints
