Odilon Redon

1840–1916 · French · Symbolism

Odilon Redon was a French Symbolist who spent the first half of his career making dark, dream-like charcoal drawings he called his noirs, before turning in middle age to the radiant pastel and oil flowers and mythological subjects of his late period. He remains one of the strangest and most personal voices of late nineteenth-century French art.

Best known for: Charcoal noirs, pastel flowers, mythological scenes
