Pre-Raphaelite and Symbolist art comprises two linked nineteenth-century currents. The Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood began in Britain in 1848, founded by Dante Gabriel Rossetti, John Everett Millais and William Holman Hunt, who rejected academic convention in favour of intense colour, meticulous detail, and subjects drawn from medieval legend, literature and myth. Symbolism emerged a generation later in France in the 1880s and spread across Europe through artists such as Gustave Moreau and Franz von Stuck, turning away from realism towards dreams, mythology and the inner imagination.
This collection brings together 20 works from across both movements: dreaming heroines from Arthurian legend, figures from Shakespeare rendered in waterlogged bloom, and scenes where myth and sorrow meet in extraordinary colour.
