1483–1520 · Italian · High Renaissance

Raphael was an Italian painter and architect of the High Renaissance, the third of the great triumvirate with Leonardo and Michelangelo. His frescoes for the papal apartments, above all The School of Athens, became the model of Renaissance composition, and his serene Madonnas defined an ideal of grace that endured for centuries.
