Rembrandt van Rijn was the leading painter of the Dutch Golden Age and one of the greatest figures in European art. He painted more than forty self-portraits over five decades, recording his own face as a study in light, character and the passage of time, alongside biblical works, group portraits and an extraordinary body of etchings.
