Vilhelm Hammershøi was a Danish painter whose quiet, near-monochrome interiors of his Copenhagen apartment have made him one of the most distinctive Northern European painters of the late nineteenth century. His careful tonal range and patient framing produced an art of stillness that has only grown in reputation.
